Christopher Ewer’s probate inventory is intriguing.
It contains a number of rooms, including a Great Chamber and a Long Chamber, lofts, kitchens, also a ‘Dungeon Chamber’ and a ‘parliament hall’.
These connections, together with quality archaeological evidence from the western area of the palace site, suggest this substantial now vanished house was adjacent to the ruins of the palace.
A functioning well survives nearby.
